Legislation, Regulation, and Jurisdictions

Governments regulate the oil and gas industry as part of their responsibility to that industry and the public. They use a combination of legislation, regulation, and code to accomplish this, of which regulation and code are the most prescriptive and the least time consuming for governments to update or revise. Guides and directives fall under that category.

The primary government documents we refer to in our ERP work are listed in the table below.

Alberta
  • Directive 56
  • Directive 71
  • CSAZ-731
BC
  • BC O&GC Emergency Response Plan Requirements
  • Section 11 of BC
Saskatchewan
  • NEB - Security & Emergency Preparedness and Response Programs
Canada
  • Canadian Environmental Protection Act 1999 - Environmental Emergency Plans
  • OPR-99: Onshore Pipeline Regulations 1999

Our clients can have projects in any of these jurisdictions and EX/PX takes great care to ensure that we meet the applicable regulations for each individual situation.

In addition, we will reference relevant documents from industry associations. For example, CAPP has a document about sheltering that was built upon the ERCB’s Directive 71 and provides additional information and guidance.
